Back to School

Syracuse University 150 signifierThe 2019-20 academic year is underway at Syracuse University! This is a significant year in the University's history, as we mark our sesquicentennial by exploring our past, present and future. Look for special programs and events, both on and off campus, as Syracuse University's 150th anniversary provides an opportunity to honor our history, reflect on our values and set a clear path forward.

As classes begin, the University is welcoming nearly 6,000 new undergraduate, transfer, graduate and professional students and more than 100 new faculty members.

Orange Central 2019

Orange Central t-shirtOrange Central, Syracuse University's annual homecoming and reunion weekend, will be here before we know it! This year's event will be another record-breaker, with more than 2,700 alumni and guests registered to come back to campus September 12-15.

Sure, the huge, primetime football game against the defending National Champion Clemson Tigers is a big attraction, but there are dozens of other exciting activities on the weekend schedule. There's still time to sign up for our milestone class reunions; interactive demonstrations, discussions and tours; our family-friendly 'Cuse Cookout; the gala Alumni Awards Celebration, and much more!

Want to make sure you get one of these exclusive Orange Central 2019 t-shirts? They're free -- as long as you sign up before online registration closes at noon on Monday, September 9.

Tailgates and game watches

We haven't seen this much excitement leading up to a Syracuse University football season since... well, let's just say it's been awhile! The Orange are ranked in the preseason Top 25 for the first time in more than two decades and the University has set a record for new football season ticket sales.

We may be biased, but we believe the best way to prepare to cheer on the Orange is to get ready for the game with fellow alumni and fans. That’s why we're once again hosting a series of football tailgates for several home and away games during the 2019 season.

at Maryland (Sept. 7)
vs. Clemson (Sept. 14 during Orange Central
vs. Holy Cross (Sept. 28)
at NC State (Oct. 10)
vs. Boston College (Nov. 2)

Even if you can't be there in person to cheer on the Orange, check out our list of game watches locations around the country. Many of our local alumni clubs are holding game watches throughout the season.

There's lots of "Newhouse" happening here...
A recent Syracuse University graduate represented Team USA at this summer's Cannes Young Lions advertising competition. Teresa James '18 partnered with a colleague from Boston's Havas Media to develop an attention-grabbing advertising campaign. Kelsey Davis '19 talked to Teresa and her teammate for an interview and story posted on mediavillage.com, which was founded by Jack Myers '69

"I see local journalism as a vital need." Meet Ashley Kang '04, G'11, who - as director of The Stand - is committed to sharing stories that may otherwise go untold in Syracuse's South Side neighborhood.

Speaking of Syracuse journalists... one that you likely watched when you were a student is ready to call it a career after 47 years. Laura Hand '71, an anchor and reporter for CNY Central (WTVH-5 and WSTM-3), is retiring in October.

When Peter Henriques ’80 was asked during a job interview about what kind of work he would do if he wasn’t in the business realm, he responded: “I’d like to be an explorer.” He has kind of been able to do that... and he credits Syracuse University for helping to make that happen.

There is a health care crisis in this country affecting a segment of the population in dire need of essential medical care, but Pat Tursi ’84, G’87 is working to ensure there is a solution on the horizon for medically complex children.

Katie Yohe poses with some of her actorsKatie Yohe '06 expected her career to lead to the stage. It has, but in a very different, and perhaps more rewarding, way than she envisioned as a freshman studying drama at Syracuse University.
